Huntington Ingalls Incorporated -Technical Solutions Division (HII-TSD) is seeking an AI/ML Principal Engineer to provide expertise and programmatic support relevant to defense, intelligence, and government applications of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) technologies and autonomous systems. This position supports a complex >$500M FEDSIM program focused on enhancing warfighter capabilities through the adoption of autonomous and artificial intelligence capabilities and machine learning. The AI/ML Principal Engineer provides overall engineering leadership and guidance for technical solutions to the Department of Defense (DoD) for resilient, survivable systems and platforms that can operate in Anti-Access Area Denial (A2AD) and near peer conflict environments. This includes collaboration with DoD/Government partners and commercial AI/ML vendors focused on gaining and exploiting information, denying competitors those same advantages, and enabling effective, resilient, and rapid command and control throughout all operations and contingency plan phases. 


  • Provide technical engineering services to support mission-related requirements to rapidly demonstrate, experiment, and prototype to deliver game-changing strategic effects that deter and if necessary, defeat near-peer adversaries in all phases of conflict 

  • Provide engineering oversight to contractor personnel focused on proving near-term (0-5 years) asymmetric concepts with feasible transition paths including 

  • Assessing requirements based on Combatant Command (CCMD) operational needs, new ideas bounded by concept maturity, operational impact, and transition feasibility 

  • Repurposing/enhancing existing programs of record, scaling existing U.S. Government concepts for DoD mission and accelerate maturing government/commercial technology

  • Prototyping coordination with Services to leverage expertise and facilitate transition 

  • Demonstrating in select DoD exercises and wargames to support CONOPs development 

  • Provide expertise in the implementation and engineering support of machine learning systems to include solving relevant technical and programmatic problems and assessing the technical feasibility of commercial solutions 

  • Interface with CCMDs, Services, Joint Staff, OSD; established Technical and Transition Cross Functional Teams CFT and other Mission Partners to identify and document problem statements (that can be solved by current DoD capabilities or commercial AI/ML solutions) as well as solve critical operational challenges 

  • Review and recommend prototype proposals from industry and commercial entities 

  • Work closely with government partners and commercial vendors throughout the prototype development lifecycle driving milestones reviews, testing, and simulations 

  • Coordinate, collaborate, and drive buy-in with senior government officials, executive leadership, and other high-ranking stakeholders

  • Prepare program updates, white papers, technical papers, briefs, and meeting materials 

  • Respond to official requests for information and other tasks from Government partners and stakeholders 

  • Participate in key intra- and inter-agency meetings 

  • Provide expertise and coordination, to operationalize and transition technologies from Research and Development (R&D) into full acquisition in a controlled and deliberate manner 

  • Travel for support with mission partners for prototype requirements, execution planning, and transition planning to include observations and evaluation testing and status meetings with Mission Partners 

  • Position primarily is telework with routine reporting to Government and HII offices in Chantilly, VA, Fair Lakes, VA, Crystal City, VA and Hanover, MD 

  • Must be able to travel CONUS and OCONUS for meetings and demonstrations up to 30% of calendar year 

  • Support new business development by leading major proposals personally, or through subordinate program/project manager 

Required Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or Mathematics 

  • 15 years of relevant experience in ISR field 

  • 5 years of experience in applied AI/ML to include areas such as radio frequency, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision (CV), full motion video (FMV), model training, testing and validation, signal processing, object recognition, object tracking and reinforcement learning 

  • 5 years managing prototyping engineering services

  • US Citizenship  

  • Possess active Top Secret (TS) with SCI eligibility 

Desired Experience 

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or Mathematics 

  • 20 years of relevant experience in ISR field 

  • 10 years of experience in applied AI/ML to include areas such as radio frequency, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision (CV), full motion video (FMV), model training, testing and validation, signal processing, object recognition, object tracking and reinforcement learning 

  • 10 years managing prototyping engineering services 

  • Experience leading engineering for large scale $100M+ budgets 

  • USINDOPACOM or USEUCOM experience 

  • FEDSIM experience 

  • Experience presenting orals proposal delivery 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Facilitating cross functional teams interacting between hardware, software, operational and performance requirements of the overall system 

  • Processing, Exploitation and Dissemination (PED) of geospatial intelligence 

  • Applying machine learning or deep learning tools 

  • Understanding of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) 

  • Transition and loading of disparate data sets 

  • Cloud computing and multi-level security 

  • Applying AI/ML to Department of Defense (DoD) and/or Intelligence Community (IC) problem domains, such as radar, optical or infrared imagery, and electronic warfare system 

  • Conducting research on emerging technologies 

  • Al frameworks such as TensorFlow, Torch, Caffe, AWS Machine Learning or Keras 

  • Agile and DevSecOps development methodologies and tools such as JIRA, Confluence, GitHub, etc. 

  • Ability to deliver multi-discipline, multi-stakeholder projects that demonstrably improve operational capabilities 

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills 

  • Strong analytic skills 

  • Leadership and management skills as evidenced by previous work experience 

  • Strong customer service orientation
