HII Unmanned Systems is seeking a Director of Engineering and Technology who will have the breadth of experience to manage technology planning and execution, research and development in a fast-paced setting.  A key objective for this role is continuous improvement in the pace of execution by instilling a sense of urgency through direct engagement and positive reinforcement. We are seeking an individual with the general skillsets of the following:

  • Demonstrated engineering leadership in a related environment.
  • Experience in leading product and process execution and innovation, technology road mapping, and commercialization. 
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience managing and developing engineering talent
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member




What you will be doing...

To achieve Unmanned System’s objectives, the Director of Engineering and Technology must produce the following critical actions and results:

  • Effectively manage the company’s engineering teams, which includes R&D, new product development, and product support, on a day to day basis.
  • Work with Business Development and Sales & Marketing functions to establish product and market strategies, and develop executable plans for technology and product releases, with a focus on reduced time-to-market.
  • Establish and maintain budgets to support both Unmanned Systems financial objectives as well as strategic R&D plans to maximize the value of new product development.
  • Support business financial objectives through opportunity development, revenue generation, and strategic R&D investments.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Operations effectively communicate production requirements, resolve issues, and ensure the successful delivery of reliable products on schedule, on budget and in a scalable manner.  
  • Recruit, develop and maintain an innovative, productive and, collaborative engineering team and, through proven leadership, help make Unmanned Systems a great place to work.  
  • Demonstrate and promote: ethical behavior, compliance with the current US DoD National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual, all other applicable legislation and regulations, and the protection of Hydroid’s intellectual property, patents, etc.  
  • Continue to advance the intelligent use of CMMI and other project management tools in engineering, research and development, and product support projects.
  • Mature a system of quality and productivity metrics that are visible and are communicated to all employees.
  • Participate as part of company’s senior management team in a collaborative strategic planning and management process. This ongoing effort includes corporate business planning, and cooperative review, advice, and assistance to fellow management team members so that each leader can execute in the most effective manner.



What we are looking for...

  • 10 years relevant progressive experience with Bachelors in related field; 8 years relevant progressive experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 14 years relevant progressive experience.
  • 15 or more years of new product development engineering experience.
  • 10 or more years of leading and managing an engineering team in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with and ability to drive continuous improvement and lean processes.
  • Demonstrated organizational and one-on-one leadership capability.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a government clearance. #LI-MH1 *TE *EP *MV



Bonus points for...

  • Specific experience in subsea systems, autonomous systems, and/or software development is a strong plus.
  • Expertise in mechanical, electrical, and electro-mechanical design, product development, software intensive product test and validation, simulation and integration for commercial, aerospace and defense applications.
  • Comfortable operating in a global environment.
  • Solid business fundamentals including a detailed understanding of return-on-investment analysis, OPEX/CAPEX management, and earned value.






Physical Requirements

May be required to visit job site in an industrial or shipboard environment. Normally not required to lift more than 40 pounds higher than three feet above feet/floor level.
